What's a tiny everyday object whose history surprised you?

The big events get the documentaries, but I love the stuff that was ordinary to the people living through it: a receipt, a bus ticket, a recipe card, a pencil sharpener. Those small objects often say more about daily life than any treaty does. What's an everyday object you looked into and found an unexpectedly rich story behind?
