What makes a corner feel cozy instead of just cluttered?

I keep adding blankets, candles and plants to my reading nook and it's drifting from warm to messy. My current theory is it's about light more than stuff: one low lamp, one clear surface, one soft thing. Where do you draw the line, and what's the one item your cozy spot can't do without?
