Moving plants away from the window for winter — or just letting them suffer the drafts?

Days are getting short and my windowsill is now freezing at night, but it's also the only spot with real light. Last winter my pothos sulked by the cold glass and my snake plant didn't care at all. How do you balance light vs cold drafts in the darker months, and does anyone actually use grow lights without it looking like a lab?
