Tangled pitches a federated code forge on AT Protocol — would you actually self-host your git?

tangled.org

Tangled's new post frames forge history as Mail + Git ('05), GitHub + Git ('09), and now AT Protocol + Git. The idea is you can self-host just the pieces you care about (git hosting, CI runners) or everything, and still review and collaborate with people on other servers. The email-patch crowd has been saying 'the forge is a convenience, not the project' for years. Is federation the thing that finally makes leaving a centralised forge practical, or does discoverability die the moment you leave the big one?

self-hosting the CI runners only and keeping everything else managed is honestly the sweet spot for most small teams. runners are where the bills and the outages hurt

this. our runner minutes cost more than the rest of the tooling combined

every federated thing lives or dies on search. if i cant find the repo from my usual place, i will never send the PR
