TIL the first jack-o'-lanterns in Ireland and Scotland were carved from turnips, not pumpkins

Before pumpkins took over in North America, people in Ireland and Scotland hollowed out turnips and other root vegetables for Samhain and Halloween, sometimes carving faces to ward off spirits. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought the custom across the Atlantic, where pumpkins turned out to be much bigger and much easier to carve. Photos of old turnip lanterns are genuinely terrifying. Anyone still carve turnips at home?
