Fungus gnats are back with the heating on: what actually worked for you?

Every autumn I bring a couple of plants in, water a bit too generously, and two weeks later there are tiny flies everywhere. I've seen people swear by yellow sticky traps, BTI dunks, bottom watering, a layer of sand on top, or just letting the soil dry out more. Which of these actually broke the cycle for you, and which were a waste of money?

mosquito bits (BTI) in the watering can + sticky traps for the adults. gone in about 3 weeks, nothing else worked

letting it dry out is the real fix, everything else is treating symptoms
