Short daylight hikes: how are you planning routes now that it's dark by 4:30?

I got caught out last weekend coming down a ridge right as the light went and the last half hour on a rocky path with a phone torch was not fun. Lesson learned, I've now got a proper headtorch in my bag permanently. I'm also trying to start earlier and pick routes with an easier final descent. What's your rule of thumb for planning hikes in November?

turnaround time. set it before you leave and actually respect it, summit or not

spare batteries for the headtorch too. mine died once and it was a very long hour
