TIL hot water can sometimes freeze faster than cold water and scientists still argue about why

It's called the Mpemba effect, named after a Tanzanian student who noticed it in the 1960s while making ice cream at school. Aristotle and Francis Bacon had apparently described something similar centuries earlier. The tricky part is that it doesn't happen reliably, and depends on evaporation, dissolved gases, convection and even the freezer. With the cold snap this week I'm tempted to test it myself. Has anyone ever actually seen it happen at home?

the fact that a highschool kid noticed and then had teachers laugh at him and turned out partly right is the best part of this story

Skeptical. Most careful experiments I've read about found it basically doesn't happen once you control stuff properly
