What is worth spending money on for directors after a few failed attempts?

This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. film got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam.

Would love to hear how other people handle this. I am especially curious about the version that works on a tired weekday, not just on an ideal Sunday.

I would start with the thing that already interests you, then branch outward by creator, era, or theme. Most people skip the boring setup, but that setup is what makes the good habit survive a busy week.

- Start small and make the next step obvious.
- Keep notes so you can compare what worked.
- Ask someone with recent experience, not just strong opinions.

Source: mostly hard-won experience and comparing notes with people who stuck with it.

I would love a follow-up example.

Thanks, that actually helped.

My practical advice is to make the next step tiny enough that you can do it today. Momentum usually answers half the question. The 5-minute rule is underrated.

This depends heavily on budget, time and personality. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

@mango_panda I think both things can be true.
