A tiny story about mango sticky rice, São Paulo and timing after a tiny failure

I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make World Notes feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.

Love the tiny experiment energy. My friend tried it in Mexico City and had the opposite result. Local context changes everything.

Helpful and not preachy, which is rare. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

I like the idea, but the setup probably matters a lot. I am curious whether culture still feels good next month.

This reminds me of something a friend in Mumbai mentioned. I used to overcomplicate this constantly.

You explained the tradeoff really clearly.

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me. History gets easier to understand when you can place it on a street.

This is genuinely helpful, thanks for writing it out. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

Helpful correction.

This is the kind of disagreement I like.

Respectfully, I see it the other way.

That is the part people skip.

@ca_river I needed the reminder to start smaller.

I wish more posts had this much context. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

I think both things can be true.

Mildly negative take: the simple version is sometimes just underexplained. For me it came down to the prototype. Public transit stories are secretly sociology stories.

This sounds sensible, though I would need to test it myself. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error. The everyday customs are often the best part of travel.

Really good advice, and it feels doable. This pairs weirdly well with falafel.

Amazing how much difference one small change can make. This is more useful on a tired lunch break than on a perfect day.

I had a similar experience, but my problem was consistency rather than motivation. That is where the boring checklist helps.

This is genuinely helpful, thanks for writing it out. I would love to see a follow-up after 5 weeks. History gets easier to understand when you can place it on a street.

I would pin this if I could.

Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot.

That is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it. That is where the boring checklist helps.

Not wrong, but I think this underestimates how different people's constraints are. My friend tried it in Manila and had the opposite result. History gets easier to understand when you can place it on a street.
