What portraits looks like when you stop optimizing everything

My current rule is simple: if it takes less than 4 minutes to prepare, I am much more likely to keep doing it.

I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

This is probly obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. street got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam

I love this. It feels practical without pretending life is neat

Mariana Costa · 42 likes

Helpful and not preachy, which is rare

Chiara Romano · 30 likes

Fair point, but I had the opposite experience. The low-effort version is probly the keeper

@dev_chiara This. Exactly this

I wish more posts had this much context. I learned that one the expensive way

Tola Ibrahim · 10 likes

Thanks for making it less intimidating

Nour Ali · 29 likes

I think both things can be true

Piotr Zieliński · 14 likes

Can you expand on that a bit?

I am curious what changed your mind

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. It sounds small, but the routine matters

Avery Johnson · 24 likes

Do you think this would work in a smaller place than Mumbai? The cozy part is easy to underestimate

Ananya Rao · 21 likes

That is a good question for people with more experience than me. My only addition is to make the first step visible

Finn Brown · 19 likes

this feels like advice from a patient friend. The surprising part is easy to underestimate. This makes me want to start a weekend project

Isha Menon · 16 likes

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. I would test it for 8 days before deciding

Sara Ahmed · 15 likes

This reminds me of something a friend in Mexico City mentioned. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me

Grace Parker · 15 likes

I think the bad version of this advice causes alot of frustration. The useful constraint is probably the real story. This makes me want to start a weekend project

I needed the reminder to start smaller

this is genuinely helpful, thanks for writing it out. For me it came down to the conversation

Oussama Alaoui · 0 likes

that is fair, but I still worry about maintenance

Mariam Al Mansoori · 9 likes

this sounds sensible, though I would need to test it myself. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near the library. Process photos would be fun to see

I would love a follow-up example

This is adorable and oddly motivating. The low-effort version is probably teh keeper

The context helps. Without it I would of assumed the opposite. The a family dinner detail changes the whole answer

I am saving this for the next time I overthink optimizing. The social part surprised me too. I like that it feels lived-in instead of over-polished

Grace Parker · 8 likes

Appreciate the nuance

Maya Williams · 5 likes

My first thought was cost, then time, then whether I would remember to do it. My friend tried it in Kuala Lumpur and had the opposite result

Piotr Zieliński · 4 likes

I am skeptical. The idea sounds good, but the maintenance cost is real. The beautiful constraint is probably the real story

Paolo Garcia · 4 likes

Agree completely. The simple version is underrated. I learned that one the expensive way

Siti Lim · 3 likes

Wonderful detail. It makes the whole thing feel real. The low-effort version is probably the keeper

Amelia Hughes · 3 likes

Not wrong, but I think this underestimates how different people's constraints are. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error

The vibe here is immaculate. The quiet part is easy to underestimate

@mango_noodle Respectfully, I see it the other way

Valeria López · 2 likes

Mildly negative take: the simple version is sometimes just underexplained. The social part surprised me too

Rapid Otter · 2 likes

Agree completely. The simple version is underrated. This is more useful on a tired first week than on a perfect day

Rapid Orbit · 15 likes

Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot

Mariana Costa · 2 likes

What would you change if you started over? I would love to see a follow-up after 2 weeks

Midnight Marauder · 2 likes

That is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing

Good reminder that boring can be good. A little friction removed goes a long way

Marco Conti · 1 likes

I found this disappointing because it skips the hardest part. I noticed the same thing in Kuala Lumpur
