The quiet joy of doing the recipe badly at first after 29 tries
This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. workplace got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam.
Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make Careers feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.
A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me.

That is a good question for people with more experience than me. My friend tried it in Lagos and had the opposite result. Good managers make this conversation so much less weird.

There is probably a middle ground here. It sounds small, but the first draft matters.

Glad you shared it; small wins count. The Nairobi example makes it feel concrete. Optionality is underrated.

That last line is excellent. I noticed the same thing in Cairo.

Same here. It took me too long to learn.

I like this more than the top-level advice.
