Today I Learned · by João Pereira · 2026-09-11

I changed one thing and suddenly culture made sense in real life

Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make Today I Learned feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.

> Tiny progress is still progress.

That line sounds cheesy, but it got me through the part where science stopped feeling new.

This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. science got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam.

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the tiny repair for a while.

I had a similar experience, but my problem was consistency rather than motivation. The Cairo example makes it feel concrete.

I would love a follow-up example.

Big fan of this approach. I used to overcomplicate this constantly. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages.

Excellent timing; I was just thinking about suddenly. It sounds small, but the first draft matters.

Love the tiny experiment energy.

This is the gentle version of my rant.

@nicolasrides Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot.

My version of this was messier, but the conclusion was similar. The awkward constraint is probably the real story. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages.

Could be regional too.

Beautifully concise.

Short answer: yes. Long answer: also yes.

Helpful correction.

@us_mango58 This is the gentle version of my rant.

You explained the tradeoff really clearly. My friend tried it in Mumbai and had the opposite result.

Valeria López · 9 likes

Interesting. I would like to see how it changes after 7 months. The the train station detail changes the whole answer.

Aoi Ito · 7 likes

Fair point, but I had the opposite experience. I would love to see a follow-up after 4 weeks.

I would love a follow-up example.

Now I want a spreadsheet.

Luca Bianchi · 19 likes

That sounds great until you add children/pets/deadlines.

João Pereira · 9 likes

That is a good boundary.

Noted, and thank you.

Big fan of this approach. The social part surprised me too.

Minh Nguyen · 4 likes

The best answer in the thread, honestly.

This has cozy competence written all over it. This is more useful on a tired quiet Sunday than on a perfect day.

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. I would write it down before changing anything else.

Luciana Vargas · 5 likes

Fair point, but I had the opposite experience. For me it came down to the first draft.

Maya Williams · 4 likes

Can you share what you tried before this? I would write it down before changing anything else.

João Pereira · 3 likes

You just saved me a bad purchase.

Aarav Sharma · 2 likes

I think both things can be true.

Felix Weber · 1 likes

That made the concept click.

That is a good question for people with more experience than me. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near the train station.

This is useful for some cases, but terrible advice if the stakes are high. That is the kind of detail beginners miss. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages.

Noor Janssens · 3 likes

Wonderful detail. It makes the whole thing feel real. A little friction removed goes a long way.

Grace Parker · 2 likes

There is probably a middle ground here. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

Hugo Sánchez · 2 likes

Agree completely. The simple version is underrated. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

Good clarification — I read it differently at first.

Priya Nair · 2 likes

Good reminder that boring can be good. The social part surprised me too.

Rapid Comet · 2 likes

That would annoy me more than it helped. For me it came down to the prototype. Small progress still counts.

Sophie Gagnon · 2 likes

This made me smile more than expected. I keep a note about science for exactly this reason.

Cozy Coder · 1 likes

Honestly, great taste. I am curious whether history still feels good next month.

Mateo Ramírez · 1 likes

Excellent timing; I was just thinking about culture. I learned that one the expensive way.

Martina Fernández · 0 likes

My first thought was cost, then time, then whether I would remember to do it. A little friction removed goes a long way.
