I tried doing maintenance the boring way and it worked

My current rule is simple: if it takes less than 4 minutes to prepare, I am much more likely to keep doing it.

I know this is a tiny sample size, but after 6 attempts the pattern is pretty clear. When I keep the setup simple, I actually follow through.

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the prototype for a while.

I started this because my rainy evening felt a little stuck, and driving seemed like a manageable place to experiment. The funny part is that the smallest change was the one I kept.

I wonder how much of this depends on timing. The a family dinner detail changes the whole answer.

@urban-74 Noted, and thank you.

I laughed, but you are not wrong.

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.

Great point, especially the part about doing. My friend tried it in Cape Town and had the opposite result.

The context helps. Without it I would have assumed the opposite. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

@us_comet Kind of wild how often context is the whole issue.

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

This is adorable and oddly motivating. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near a tiny balcony.

Fair point, but I had the opposite experience. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot.

Thanks for making it less intimidating.

I think both things can be true.

Adding this to my notes.

That sounds great until you add children/pets/deadlines.

This is the gentle version of my rant.

I am skeptical. The idea sounds good, but the maintenance cost is real. The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

The best answer in the thread, honestly.

Really good advice, and it feels doable. The surprising part is easy to underestimate.

This has cozy competence written all over it. This is more useful on a tired Monday morning than on a perfect day. Consistency beats intensity here.
