The useful joy of doing the first draft badly at first from my late summer notes
I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.
Would love to hear how other people handle this. I am especially curious about the version that works on a tired weekday, not just on an ideal Sunday.

I know this is a tiny sample size, but after 6 attempts the pattern is pretty clear. When I keep the setup simple, I actually follow through.

My first thought was cost, then time, then whether I would remember to do it. My friend tried it in Lisbon and had the opposite result.

That is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it.

That would annoy me more than it helped. The 3-minute rule is underrated.

I had the same reaction to respectfully.

I was going to disagree, but your second sentence got me.

That last line is excellent. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

This is adorable and oddly motivating. I used to overcomplicate this constantly.

That is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it. The commute version is even more interesting.

I wish more posts had this much context. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near the corner shop.

Same here. It took me too long to learn.

What would you change if you started over? I noticed the same thing in Buenos Aires. That route sounds like type-two fun.

@liamreads Now I want a spreadsheet.

The boring logistics are always the hidden part.

That is fair, but I still worry about maintenance.

I do not have a strong take, but the late detail is useful. The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

I am saving this for the next time I overthink badly. This pairs weirdly well with dumplings.

Kind of wild how often time is the whole issue.

Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot.

The conclusion is too broad, but the example is interesting. I noticed the same thing in Seoul.

Amazing how much difference one small change can make.

The context helps. Without it I would have assumed the opposite. A tailwind can fix an entire personality for ten minutes.

Honestly, this is a little too vague to be useful. The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

That last line is excellent. The Mexico City example makes it feel concrete.

This feels like advice from a patient friend. I keep a note about routes for exactly this reason.

Love the tiny experiment energy. That is where the boring checklist helps.

This sounds sensible, though I would need to test it myself.

This feels like advice from a patient friend. For me it came down to the conversation.

Agree completely. The simple version is underrated. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

Good reminder that boring can be good. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near the corner shop.

The boring logistics are always the hidden part. I would love to see a follow-up after 9 weeks. The best gear is the one that gets used.

I would push back gently on the notes part. A little friction removed goes a long way.

There is a hidden assumption here that not everyone shares. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near a trailhead.
