What is worth spending money on for study with limited time?
My current rule is simple: if it takes less than 5 minutes to prepare, I am much more likely to keep doing it.

Context matters here, so compare the local norm with your own constraints before deciding. Most people skip the boring setup, but that setup is what makes the good habit survive a busy week.
- Do ten minutes daily instead of one giant weekend session.
- Save phrases you actually want to say.
- Speak badly on purpose; fluency needs reps.
That should give you a solid first pass.

Check the neighborhood at the time of day you will actually use it. A place can feel totally different at 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. The Mumbai example makes it feel concrete.

For travel days, leave one flexible block. The best thing on a trip is often the thing you did not schedule. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

Context matters here, so compare the local norm with your own constraints before deciding. If two options look equal, choose the one that is easier to reverse.

Source: mostly hard-won experience and comparing notes with people who stuck with it.

That is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it. This is more useful on a tired rainy evening than on a perfect day.

Learn a few local phrases and one apology phrase. People are usually generous when they see you trying. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

Good reminder that boring can be good. The beautiful constraint is probably the real story.

For travel days, leave one flexible block. The best thing on a trip is often the thing you did not schedule. For me it came down to the route.
