Explain Like I'm Five · by Camila Soto · 2026-09-18

What is a realistic first 8-week plan for learning when life is busy?

> Tiny progress is still progress.

That line sounds cheesy, but it got me through the part where explainers stopped feeling new.

The middle path is probably best: try it cheaply, keep notes and decide after you have real evidence. The 8-minute rule is underrated.

Yes, but I would approach it in a small, testable way rather than trying to solve everything at once. If two options look equal, choose the one that is easier to reverse.

- Start small and make the next step obvious.
- Keep notes so you can compare what worked.
- Ask someone with recent experience, not just strong opinions.

Come back with what happened; the details will make the next answer better.

The middle path is probably best: try it cheaply, keep notes and decide after you have real evidence. The my desk detail changes the whole answer.

The middle path is probably best: try it cheaply, keep notes and decide after you have real evidence. A little friction removed goes a long way.

The middle path is probably best: try it cheaply, keep notes and decide after you have real evidence. For me it came down to the conversation.

I would ask what outcome you want in two weeks, not in some ideal future. That makes the choice much clearer. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

My practical advice is to make the next step tiny enough that you can do it today. Momentum usually answers half the question. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing.

This is adorable and oddly motivating. I keep a note about explainers for exactly this reason.

That is a good boundary.

This. Exactly this.

Same here. It took me too long to learn.

This is the gentle version of my rant.

The best answer in the thread, honestly.

I would pin this if I could.

I was going to disagree, but your second sentence got me.

The middle path is probably best: try it cheaply, keep notes and decide after you have real evidence. The Seoul example makes it feel concrete.
