I finally understand why Funny people care about jokes before coffee

Would love to hear how other people handle this. I am especially curious about the version that works on a tired weekday, not just on an ideal Sunday.

The detail that surprised me was how much the library changed the outcome. Same plan, different setting, completely different energy.

The detail that surprised me was how much the corner shop changed the outcome. Same plan, different setting, completely different energy.

I started this because my first week felt a little stuck, and stories seemed like a manageable place to experiment. The funny part is that the smallest change was the one I kept.

That last line is excellent. I noticed the same thing in Warsaw.

Luca Bianchi · 5 likes

I laughed, but you are not wrong.

Pieter Botha · 49 likes

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. The beautiful constraint is probably the real story.

Finn Brown · 48 likes

Big fan of this approach. My friend tried it in Cape Town and had the opposite result.

Piotr Zieliński · 38 likes

Interesting. I would like to see how it changes after 3 months. I would write it down before changing anything else.

Finn Brown · 33 likes

Honestly, great taste. I noticed the same thing in Madrid.

Aarav Sharma · 17 likes

I found this disappointing because it skips the hardest part. My friend tried it in Kuala Lumpur and had the opposite result.

Maya Williams · 14 likes

Love the tiny experiment energy. This is more useful on a tired busy month than on a perfect day.

Chinedu Adeyemi · 12 likes

Interesting. I would like to see how it changes after 7 months. I would test it for 8 days before deciding.

Miguel Santos · 12 likes

Great point, especially the part about before. I learned that one the expensive way.

Curious Noodle · 11 likes

Really good advice, and it feels doable. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

Amina Okafor · 10 likes

Great point, especially the part about people. I noticed the same thing in Lagos.

Miguel Santos · 6 likes

That is a good boundary.

Amina Okafor · 3 likes

Beautifully concise.

Rohan Mehta · 5 likes

That is fair, but I still worry about maintenance.

Urban Fern · 2 likes

I like this more than the top-level advice.

Cedar Coder · 2 likes

My wallet felt that.

Amina Okafor · 1 likes

@miguelrides Yep, the boring details matter.

Camille Dubois · 10 likes

Honestly, great taste. This pairs weirdly well with pierogi. Glad you shared the messy version too.

Yui Tanaka · 9 likes

Do you think this would work in a smaller place than Dublin? The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

Jiho Lee · 10 likes

I would pin this if I could.

Luca Bianchi · 8 likes

@jp_comet50 I think both things can be true.

Rapid River · 4 likes

This comment has main-character footnote energy.

Noé Petit · 3 likes

That made the concept click.

Luca Bianchi · 0 likes

Thanks for making it less intimidating.

Curious Orbit · 9 likes

The people angle is what sold me.

Chloe Davis · 9 likes

This is adorable and oddly motivating. For me it came down to the practice run. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages.

Isha Menon · 9 likes

Can you share what you tried before this? The Melbourne example makes it feel concrete.

Paolo Garcia · 7 likes

Great point, especially the part about finally. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me. People underestimate how much sleep changes the answer.

Grace Parker · 7 likes

Agree completely. The simple version is underrated. The cozy constraint is probably the real story.

Maya Williams · 2 likes

Beautifully concise.

Kabir Khan · 7 likes

The kindness in this post is lovely. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

Chloe Davis · 6 likes

Excellent timing; I was just thinking about jokes. A little friction removed goes a long way.

Léa Bernard · 6 likes

This made me smile more than expected. I learned that one the expensive way.

Avery Johnson · 6 likes

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. The social part surprised me too.

Grace Parker · 5 likes

I think the bad version of this advice causes a lot of frustration. The quiet constraint is probably the real story.

Cedar Otter · 24 likes

This is the gentle version of my rant.

Aisha Rahman · 1 likes

Anecdote beats theory here.

Grace Parker · 2 likes

That is a much better way to say it.

Luca Bianchi · 1 likes

Exactly; the hidden cost is energy.

Luca Bianchi · 1 likes

I like this more than the top-level advice.

Grace Parker · 1 likes

That sounds great until you add children/pets/deadlines.

Tiny Fern · 4 likes

I am saving this for the next time I overthink before. It sounds small, but the playlist matters.

Emir Kaya · 4 likes

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. I would love to see a follow-up after 7 weeks.

Hugo Sánchez · 3 likes

This is useful for some cases, but terrible advice if the stakes are high. My only addition is to make the first step visible. Small progress still counts.

Rohan Mehta · 12 likes

Fair pushback.

Lucas Silva · 6 likes

I had the same reaction to visible.

Solar Mango · 3 likes

Amazing how much difference one small change can make. My friend tried it in Berlin and had the opposite result.

Maja Wiśniewska · 1 likes

Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot.

Yui Tanaka · 3 likes

Great point, especially the part about finally.

Pieter Botha · 3 likes

Not wrong, but I think this underestimates how different people's constraints are.

Yui Tanaka · 2 likes

This has cozy competence written all over it. I am curious whether stories still feels good next month.

Nicolás Díaz · 61 likes

This is the gentle version of my rant.

Mariana Costa · 6 likes

Could be regional too.

Aarav Sharma · 2 likes

Can you share what you tried before this? The beautiful part is easy to underestimate.

Jasmine Cruz · 2 likes

This has cozy competence written all over it. My friend tried it in Manila and had the opposite result.

Maya Williams · 1 likes

I wonder how much of this depends on timing. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing.

Aarav Sharma · 28 likes

This comment has main-character footnote energy.

Maya Williams · 6 likes

This is the kind of disagreement I like.

Haruto Sato · 2 likes

@urban_maya Can you expand on that a bit?

Maya Williams · 2 likes

You just saved me a bad purchase.

Salma Idrissi · 6 likes

That made the concept click.

Chloe Davis · 3 likes

I had the same reaction to question.

Maya Williams · 0 likes

@quiet_chloe98 That made the concept click.

Priya Nair · 2 likes

Adding this to my notes.

Luca Bianchi · 2 likes

Kind of wild how often timing is the whole issue.

Hugo Martin · 1 likes

Big fan of this approach. That is where the boring checklist helps.

Cedar Runner · 1 likes

I wish more posts had this much context.

Tiny Rider · 1 likes

This feels like advice from a patient friend. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

Amina Okafor · 1 likes

Big fan of this approach. I would test it for 3 days before deciding. I needed this reminder today.

Isha Menon · 1 likes

That is a good question for people with more experience than me. The the kitchen detail changes the whole answer.

Maya Putri · 1 likes

There is a hidden assumption here that not everyone shares. I would love to see a follow-up after 10 weeks.

Kabir Khan · 1 likes

The context helps. Without it I would have assumed the opposite. The lunch break version is even more interesting.

Noah Miller · 1 likes

There is probably a middle ground here. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

Kabir Khan · 1 likes

This is useful for some cases, but terrible advice if the stakes are high. I would love to see a follow-up after 9 weeks.

Gentle Atlas · 1 likes

This feels a little overrated to me, even if the intention is good. This is more useful on a tired lunch break than on a perfect day.

Cozy Mango · 1 likes

Excellent timing; I was just thinking about coffee. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near the library.

Jiho Lee · 18 likes

@urban_youssef I laughed, but you are not wrong.

Rohan Mehta · 2 likes

The Tuesday test is undefeated.

Iryna Melnyk · 0 likes

I get the appeal, though I would be careful calling it the best option. I would test it for 7 days before deciding.

Theo Bennett · 0 likes

This feels like advice from a patient friend. I keep a note about stories for exactly this reason.

Brave Orbit · 0 likes

The kindness in this post is lovely. I noticed the same thing in São Paulo. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages.

There is probably a middle ground here. The Jakarta example makes it feel concrete.
