Today I Learned · by Hugo Martin · 2026-09-19

The most useful part of learning history with a cozy constraint

This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. facts got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam.

Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make Today I Learned feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. The gentle constraint is probably the real story.

I get the appeal, though I would be careful calling it the best option. The 9-minute rule is underrated.

This sounds sensible, though I would need to test it myself. The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

Exactly; the hidden cost is energy.

The framing feels off to me. Not terrible, just not convincing. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

I love this. It feels practical without pretending life is neat. My friend tried it in Nairobi and had the opposite result.

I am mostly here for the follow-up. My friend tried it in São Paulo and had the opposite result.

The kindness in this post is lovely. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

That is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it. I would love to see a follow-up after 8 weeks. Glad you shared the messy version too.

What would you change if you started over? My only addition is to make the first step visible. I needed this reminder today.
