What recommendations looks like when you stop optimizing everything after a tiny failure

I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the routine for a while.

What would you change if you started over? It sounds small, but the practice run matters.

Theo Bennett · 3 likes

I am stealing that phrase.

Rafael Almeida · 7 likes

Totally agree, especially for beginners.

Pixel Runner · 2 likes

Could be regional too.

Noah Campbell · 1 likes

This is the kind of disagreement I like.

Giulia Rossi · 182 likes

Can you share what you tried before this? My friend tried it in Istanbul and had the opposite result.

Chinedu Adeyemi · 155 likes

Amazing how much difference one small change can make. The Buenos Aires example makes it feel concrete.

Ethan Brooks · 16 likes

I would pin this if I could.

Noah Miller · 81 likes

This sounds good, but in practice it can be a bad idea without more context. The low-effort version is probably the keeper. This is why house rules need a constitution.

Jonas Schneider · 76 likes

Great point, especially the part about tiny. I noticed the same thing in Mexico City.

Benjamín Rojas · 44 likes

I like the idea, but the setup probably matters a lot. The useful constraint is probably the real story.

Miguel Santos · 86 likes

I needed the reminder to start smaller.

Grace Parker · 4 likes

Could be regional too.

Lucas Dubois · 43 likes

I am cheering for this update. The social part surprised me too. Backlog guilt is a shared cultural experience.

Hugo Martin · 4 likes

That is fair, but I still worry about maintenance.

Nour Ali · 3 likes

This. Exactly this.

Rohan Mehta · 42 likes

I am cheering for this update. That is where the boring checklist helps.

Bilal Raza · 37 likes

Did anyone else read this and immediately make a tiny checklist? That is where the boring checklist helps.

Piotr Zieliński · 3 likes

Can you expand on that a bit?

Ananya Rao · 36 likes

The conclusion is too broad, but the example is interesting. The ambitious part is easy to underestimate.

Haruto Sato · 35 likes

I disagree a bit. tiny matters, but the bigger issue is usually expectations. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me.

Chinedu Adeyemi · 34 likes

Mildly negative take: the simple version is sometimes just underexplained. I noticed the same thing in Jakarta.

Lucas Silva · 33 likes

This sounds sensible, though I would need to test it myself. That is the kind of detail beginners miss. This is why house rules need a constitution.

Brave Rider · 29 likes

Did anyone else read this and immediately make a tiny checklist? It reminds me of a very specific conversation near a coworking table.

Aoi Ito · 27 likes

This has cozy competence written all over it. I keep a note about manga for exactly this reason.

Jasmine Cruz · 27 likes

I wish more posts had this much context. That is where the boring checklist helps. Co-op makes almost anything better.

Marco Conti · 26 likes

I like the idea, but the setup probably matters a lot. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

Nusrat Akter · 26 likes

Mildly negative take: the simple version is sometimes just underexplained. I used to overcomplicate this constantly.

Ren Suzuki · 25 likes

I get the appeal, though I would be careful calling it the best option. I would test it for 2 days before deciding.

Nour Ali · 27 likes

Same here. It took me too long to learn.

Nour Ali · 21 likes

Can you expand on that a bit?

Rafael Almeida · 9 likes

Now I want a spreadsheet.

Ananya Rao · 12 likes

Fair pushback.

Maksym Bondar · 5 likes

I would pin this if I could.

Isha Menon · 8 likes

Beautifully concise.

Hugo Sánchez · 0 likes

That is a much better way to say it.

Maya Williams · 21 likes

The kindness in this post is lovely. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near the corner shop. That final turn energy is unbeatable.

Ngozi Bello · 21 likes

I agree with the goal and disagree with the method. For me it came down to the setup.

Maia Brown · 20 likes

You explained the tradeoff really clearly. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

Jasmine Cruz · 19 likes

I disagree a bit. tiny matters, but the bigger issue is usually expectations. I used to overcomplicate this constantly.

Haruto Sato · 39 likes

Thanks, that actually helped.

Nour Ali · 8 likes

My wallet felt that.

Haruto Sato · 2 likes

I would pin this if I could.

Jasmine Cruz · 7 likes

Appreciate the nuance.

Paolo Garcia · 46 likes

Thanks for making it less intimidating.

Mara Fischer · 19 likes

I had a similar experience, but my problem was consistency rather than motivation. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.

Minji Kim · 19 likes

What would you change if you started over? I would love to see a follow-up after 5 weeks.

Lena Müller · 5 likes

Could be regional too.

Paolo Garcia · 19 likes

The boring logistics are always the hidden part. The practical part is easy to underestimate.

Solar Lantern · 18 likes

The context helps. Without it I would have assumed the opposite. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

Minh Nguyen · 17 likes

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. That is where the boring checklist helps.

Ethan Brooks · 14 likes

You explained the tradeoff really clearly. The 2-minute rule is underrated.

Sebastián Rojas · 13 likes

Love the tiny experiment energy. The a family dinner detail changes the whole answer.

Pablo Martín · 13 likes

This feels a little overrated to me, even if the intention is good. My friend tried it in Mumbai and had the opposite result. The real boss fight is finding a night everyone is free.

Yui Tanaka · 13 likes

I love this. It feels practical without pretending life is neat. The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

Aarav Sharma · 12 likes

I do not have a strong take, but the everything detail is useful. I would test it for 3 days before deciding.

Rapid River · 32 likes

Avery Johnson · 41 likes

I was going to disagree, but your second sentence got me.

Isha Menon · 11 likes

Useful intention, poor execution. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me.

Haruto Sato · 11 likes

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. I noticed the same thing in Dublin.

Lotte Jansen · 10 likes

That last line is excellent. I keep a note about manga for exactly this reason.

Finn Brown · 19 likes

Good clarification — I read it differently at first.

Mariana Costa · 10 likes

I am skeptical. The idea sounds good, but the maintenance cost is real. My only addition is to make the first step visible. That final turn energy is unbeatable.

Chiara Romano · 9 likes

Honestly, great taste. I learned that one the expensive way.
