I tried doing advice the boring way and it worked after a tiny failure

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the recipe for a while.

My current rule is simple: if it takes less than 10 minutes to prepare, I am much more likely to keep doing it.

A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat

This feels a little overrated to me, even if the intention is good. That is where the boring checklist helps.

Mango Otter · 33 likes

Kind of wild how often even is the whole issue.

Luciana Vargas · 68 likes

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. It sounds small, but the tiny repair matters.

Jonas Schneider · 65 likes

This feels like advice from a patient friend.

Rohan Mehta · 46 likes

Honestly, great taste. I keep a note about people for exactly this reason.

Paolo Garcia · 44 likes

What happened after the first week? I am curious whether advice stayed easy.

Rizky Pratama · 44 likes

This is adorable and oddly motivating. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing.

Benjamín Rojas · 2 likes

I like this more than the top-level advice.

Aisha Rahman · 30 likes

That is a good question for people with more experience than me.

Aisha Rahman · 24 likes

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. I would write it down before changing anything else.

Aarav Sharma · 20 likes

That last line is excellent.

Siti Lestari · 20 likes

Really good advice, and it feels doable. The follow-through matters more than the perfect plan.

Silver Comet · 13 likes

I think both things can be true.

Achieng Njeri · 3 likes

Can you expand on that a bit?

Tiny Baker · 2 likes

I was going to disagree, but your second sentence got me.

Siti Lestari · 1 likes

I am stealing that phrase.

Sofía Hernández · 17 likes

You explained the tradeoff really clearly. The social part surprised me too.

Camila Rocha · 17 likes

I disagree a bit. tiny matters, but the bigger issue is usually expectations. The social part surprised me too.

Lucas Silva · 16 likes

I do not have a strong take, but the worked detail is useful. The late summer version is even more interesting.

Noah Miller · 5 likes

I am stealing that phrase.

Mia Anderson · 16 likes

The conclusion is too broad, but the example is interesting. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

Achieng Njeri · 11 likes

Same here. It took me too long to learn.

Khalid Al Zahrani · 9 likes

Kind of wild how often beginners is the whole issue.

Jasmine Cruz · 1 likes

Thanks for making it less intimidating.

Yep, the boring details matter.

Aoi Ito · 2 likes

I think both things can be true.

Jack Taylor · 7 likes

That is fair, but I still worry about maintenance.

Mariam Said · 3 likes

Totally agree, especially for beginners.

Danylo Kovalenko · 2 likes

Fair pushback.

Achieng Njeri · 1 likes

Thanks, that actually helped.

Achieng Njeri · 6 likes

Thanks, that actually helped.

Achieng Njeri · 5 likes

That made the concept click.

Hugo Sánchez · 15 likes

The boring logistics are always the hidden part. For me it came down to the setup.

Olena Shevchenko · 13 likes

Fair point, but I had the opposite experience. My friend tried it in Seoul and had the opposite result. People underestimate how much sleep changes the answer.

Kabir Khan · 12 likes

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. I am curious whether people still feels good next month.

Benjamín Rojas · 11 likes

The kindness in this post is lovely. I keep a note about advice for exactly this reason. People underestimate how much sleep changes the answer.

This. Exactly this.

That is fair, but I still worry about maintenance.

Lena Müller · 1 likes

Love the tiny experiment energy. The the corner shop detail changes the whole answer.

I agree with the goal and disagree with the method.

Chiara Romano · 1 likes

Appreciate the nuance.

Kabir Khan · 1 likes

You just saved me a bad purchase.

Tiago Costa · 4 likes

This is one of those ideas that looks great online and falls apart on Tuesday. This pairs weirdly well with idli.

Cozy Runner · 4 likes

Can you share what you tried before this? The 10-minute rule is underrated. Small progress still counts.

Valeria López · 0 likes

Appreciate the nuance.

Maya Williams · 4 likes

My first thought was cost, then time, then whether I would remember to do it. My friend tried it in Lagos and had the opposite result.

Mango Otter · 3 likes

This is genuinely helpful, thanks for writing it out. My friend tried it in Toronto and had the opposite result. People underestimate how much sleep changes the answer.

Benjamín Rojas · 1 likes

That is a good boundary.

Narin Chai · 3 likes

This is useful for some cases, but terrible advice if the stakes are high. The Kuala Lumpur example makes it feel concrete.

The Tuesday test is undefeated.

Sleepy Rider · 3 likes

I am cheering for this update. I am curious whether questions still feels good next month. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages.

Rizky Pratama · 3 likes

Maybe, but the tradeoff seems bigger than the post suggests. Glad you shared the messy version too.

Finn Brown · 1 likes

Fair pushback.

Isha Menon · 3 likes

This has cozy competence written all over it.

Jack Taylor · 12 likes

That is the part people skip.

Hugo Martin · 3 likes

Fair point, but I had the opposite experience. For me it came down to the first draft.

Same here. It took me too long to learn.

Haruto Sato · 0 likes

I had the same reaction to friction.

Noah Miller · 2 likes

Interesting. I would like to see how it changes after 5 months. The gentle part is easy to underestimate.

Angel Reyes · 2 likes

Did anyone else read this and immediately make a tiny checklist? A little friction removed goes a long way.

Urban Atlas · 2 likes

Useful intention, poor execution. I noticed the same thing in Kuala Lumpur.

Felix Weber · 7 likes

That is fair, but I still worry about maintenance.

Tiago Costa · 2 likes

Exactly; the hidden cost is energy.
