Language Learning · by Liam Eriksson · 2026-09-21

What would you rather spend a free Saturday doing after a tiny failure

Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make Language Learning feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.

A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat

This reminds me of something a friend in Nairobi mentioned.

Not for me got my vote. The other choices are good, but this one fits my week. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

Surprised more people aren't choosing Not for me. It seems like the practical answer. A little friction removed goes a long way.

Adding this to my notes.

@miguel-38 Could be regional too.

Maybe later got my vote. The other choices are good, but this one fits my week. The my desk detail changes the whole answer.

@ruby-25 I had the same reaction to whole.

Anecdote beats theory here.

Maybe later got my vote. The other choices are good, but this one fits my week. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

The spend angle is what sold me. The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

Only with help got my vote. The other choices are good, but this one fits my week. The quiet constraint is probably the real story.

I think both things can be true.

This is the gentle version of my rant.

That is fair, but I still worry about maintenance.

Respectfully, I see it the other way.

Surprised more people aren't choosing Only with help. It seems like the practical answer. I used to overcomplicate this constantly.

Luca Bianchi · 6 likes

Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot.

Maya Putri · 4 likes

What would you change if you started over? A little friction removed goes a long way.

Hana Choi · 3 likes

That is a much better way to say it.

Lukas Huber · 4 likes

That sounds great until you add children/pets/deadlines.

I picked Not for me, mostly because it feels easiest to live with. The Lisbon example makes it feel concrete.

Could be regional too.

Surprised more people aren't choosing Only with help. It seems like the practical answer. It sounds small, but the first draft matters.

Now I want a spreadsheet.

I picked Not for me, mostly because it feels easiest to live with. I am curious whether speaking still feels good next month.

Liam Eriksson · 1 likes

Same here. It took me too long to learn.

I picked Maybe later, mostly because it feels easiest to live with. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me.

The kindness in this post is lovely. I would test it for 9 days before deciding.

Quiet Fern · 2 likes

Kind of wild how often test is the whole issue.

I picked Only with help, mostly because it feels easiest to live with. That is where the boring checklist helps.

Interesting. I would like to see how it changes after 5 months. For me it came down to the first draft.

Not for me got my vote. The other choices are good, but this one fits my week. The awkward part is easy to underestimate.

This made me smile more than expected. The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

This. Exactly this.

I wish more posts had this much context. I would test it for 4 days before deciding.

I like the idea, but the setup probably matters a lot. The Kuala Lumpur example makes it feel concrete.

I picked Only with help, mostly because it feels easiest to live with. This is more useful on a tired Monday morning than on a perfect day.

I picked Not for me, mostly because it feels easiest to live with. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.
