Today I Learned · by Iryna Melnyk · 2026-09-23

A gentle rant about history and expectations on a budget

I tried this in Cape Town with a friend and we both noticed the same thing: the social part mattered more than the perfect plan.

I know this is a tiny sample size, but after 5 attempts the pattern is pretty clear. When I keep the setup simple, I actually follow through.

I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

I started this because my commute felt a little stuck, and culture seemed like a manageable place to experiment. The funny part is that the smallest change was the one I kept.

I agree with the goal and disagree with the method. This is more useful on a tired weekend than on a perfect day. Small progress still counts.

Ngozi Bello · 11 likes

The Tuesday test is undefeated.

This comment has main-character footnote energy.

Grace Parker · 2 likes

I think both things can be true.

Ngozi Bello · 1 likes

I laughed, but you are not wrong.

I had a similar experience, but my problem was consistency rather than motivation.

I love this. It feels practical without pretending life is neat. The Jakarta example makes it feel concrete. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages.

Hugo Martin · 13 likes

Helpful and not preachy, which is rare. A little friction removed goes a long way.

Sleepy Mango · 13 likes

You explained the tradeoff really clearly. I would love to see a follow-up after 7 weeks.

Pixel Baker · 11 likes

Maybe, but the tradeoff seems bigger than the post suggests. The Berlin example makes it feel concrete.

Midnight Sparrow · 6 likes

That sounds great until you add children/pets/deadlines.

Anecdote beats theory here.

@ae_marauder This is the kind of disagreement I like.

I appreciate the honest middle stage, not just the polished ending. I used to overcomplicate this constantly.

Valeria López · 1 likes

Exactly; the hidden cost is energy.

Can you share what you tried before this? The 9-minute rule is underrated.

Sleepy Runner · 8 likes

I do not have a strong take, but the history detail is useful. I am curious whether history still feels good next month.

Iryna Melnyk · 1 likes

Appreciate the nuance.

Miguel Santos · 7 likes

I am cheering for this update. It sounds small, but the first draft matters.

Love the tiny experiment energy. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

Sleepy Noodle · 6 likes

Fair point, but I had the opposite experience. The chaotic part is easy to underestimate.

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near a family dinner.

Felix Weber · 4 likes

Really good advice, and it feels doable. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near my desk.

Gentle Comet · 1 likes

My wallet felt that.

Iryna Melnyk · 4 likes

That made the concept click.

Ngozi Bello · 3 likes

Thanks, that actually helped.

Sleepy Rider · 4 likes

This made me smile more than expected. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing.

Siti Lestari · 25 likes

I needed the reminder to start smaller.

Antonia Silva · 4 likes

Useful intention, poor execution. The late summer version is even more interesting.

Anna Gruber · 4 likes

I wonder how much of this depends on timing. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me.

Good reminder that boring can be good. I am curious whether history still feels good next month.

Felix Weber · 64 likes

I am stealing that phrase.

Olena Shevchenko · 4 likes

I like the idea, but the setup probably matters a lot. That is where the boring checklist helps.

Hamza Malik · 4 likes

Interesting. I would like to see how it changes after 5 months.

Can you share what you tried before this? This pairs weirdly well with falafel.

This reminds me of something a friend in Nairobi mentioned. The Mumbai example makes it feel concrete.

The boring logistics are always the hidden part. I learned that one the expensive way.

The vibe here is immaculate. I would test it for 8 days before deciding. Glad you shared the messy version too.
