A gentle rant about astronomy and expectations after a tiny failure
Would love to hear how other people handle this. I am especially curious about the version that works on a tired weekday, not just on an ideal Sunday.
A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat
Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the routine for a while.
I started this because my lunch break felt a little stuck, and astronomy seemed like a manageable place to experiment. The funny part is that the smallest change was the one I kept.

Do you think this would work in a smaller place than Nairobi? For me it came down to the routine.

The kindness in this post is lovely. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

Good clarification — I read it differently at first.

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. I learned that one the expensive way.

Short answer: yes. Long answer: also yes.

That sounds great until you add children/pets/deadlines.

Agree completely. The simple version is underrated.

@jack-28 Same here. It took me too long to learn.

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. The social part surprised me too.

This is useful for some cases, but terrible advice if the stakes are high. I noticed the same thing in Seoul. Now I want to read the paper behind it.

I disagree a bit. expectations matters, but the bigger issue is usually expectations. I used to overcomplicate this constantly. The uncertainty is part of what makes it interesting.

What happened after the first week? I am curious whether tiny stayed easy. I would write it down before changing anything else.

Did anyone else read this and immediately make a tiny checklist? The ambitious constraint is probably the real story.

I would push back gently on the tiny part. The a trailhead detail changes the whole answer.

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for.
