Explain Like I'm Five · by Aoi Ito · 2026-09-23

A tiny story about pierogi, Manila and timing without making it complicated

I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat

This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. simple got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam.

The framing feels off to me. Not terrible, just not convincing. The social part surprised me too.

The boring logistics are always the hidden part. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

This is genuinely helpful, thanks for writing it out. This is more useful on a tired quiet Sunday than on a perfect day.

Noted, and thank you.

I would not call it wrong, just incomplete. The useful part is easy to underestimate.

This has cozy competence written all over it. The 7-minute rule is underrated.

I do not have a strong take, but the tiny detail is useful. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near a neighborhood park.

The boring logistics are always the hidden part. I keep a note about learning for exactly this reason. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages.

You just saved me a bad purchase.

The best answer in the thread, honestly.

The context helps. Without it I would have assumed the opposite.

This is adorable and oddly motivating. I would love to see a follow-up after 4 weeks.

Really good advice, and it feels doable. I learned that one the expensive way.

Anecdote beats theory here.

@solar_runner81 I needed the reminder to start smaller.

Totally agree, especially for beginners.

I would pin this if I could.

This is the kind of disagreement I like.
