Language Learning · by Maya Williams · 2026-09-25

What would you do first if you were new to Language Learning on a budget?

My current rule is simple: if it takes less than 3 minutes to prepare, I am much more likely to keep doing it.

For travel days, leave one flexible block. The best thing on a trip is often the thing you did not schedule. The commute version is even more interesting.

Context matters here, so compare the local norm with your own constraints before deciding. You will learn more from a simple version repeated three times than from a perfect plan you never start.

- Do ten minutes daily instead of one giant weekend session.
- Save phrases you actually want to say.
- Speak badly on purpose; fluency needs reps.

Come back with what happened; the details will make the next answer better.

I think both things can be true.

This. Exactly this.

Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot.

@majabakes Short answer: yes. Long answer: also yes.

Honestly, great taste. I used to overcomplicate this constantly.

Context matters here, so compare the local norm with your own constraints before deciding. The trap is trying to optimize before you have feedback.

Source: mostly hard-won experience and comparing notes with people who stuck with it.

Learn a few local phrases and one apology phrase. People are usually generous when they see you trying. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

Check the neighborhood at the time of day you will actually use it. A place can feel totally different at 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

@cometRunner90 I like this more than the top-level advice.

This made me smile more than expected. For me it came down to the setup.

For travel days, leave one flexible block. The best thing on a trip is often the thing you did not schedule. My friend tried it in Buenos Aires and had the opposite result.
