Explain Like I'm Five · by Mateo Cruz · 2026-09-25

What is the kindest way to start with learning in real life?

I tried this in Cairo with a friend and we both noticed the same thing: the social part mattered more than the perfect plan.

I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

I started this because my first week felt a little stuck, and learning seemed like a manageable place to experiment. The funny part is that the smallest change was the one I kept.

Yes, but I would approach it in a small, testable way rather than trying to solve everything at once. If two options look equal, choose the one that is easier to reverse.

- Start small and make the next step obvious.
- Keep notes so you can compare what worked.
- Ask someone with recent experience, not just strong opinions.

Hope this helps!

I would ask what outcome you want in two weeks, not in some ideal future. That makes the choice much clearer. It sounds small, but the recipe matters.

This is the gentle version of my rant.

My practical advice is to make the next step tiny enough that you can do it today. Momentum usually answers half the question. I keep a note about simple for exactly this reason.
