Explain Like I'm Five · by Liam Wilson · 2026-09-25
My favorite low-effort upgrade for questions from a trailhead
This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. explainers got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam.
A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat
My current rule is simple: if it takes less than 6 minutes to prepare, I am much more likely to keep doing it.
Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make Explain Like I'm Five feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.

That is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it. The 2-minute rule is underrated.

That last line is excellent. I learned that one the expensive way.

Helpful and not preachy, which is rare. I noticed the same thing in Warsaw.

I think both things can be true.

@urban_mango36 Short answer: yes. Long answer: also yes.

I agree with the goal and disagree with the method. The gentle constraint is probably the real story. I needed this reminder today.

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near the corner shop.

Honestly, this is a little too vague to be useful. The winter version is even more interesting.

There is probably a middle ground here. It sounds small, but the recipe matters.

Amazing how much difference one small change can make. It sounds small, but the route matters.

What happened after the first week? I am curious whether trailhead stayed easy. I would test it for 3 days before deciding.

I wonder how much of this depends on timing.

I love this. It feels practical without pretending life is neat. The quiet part is easy to underestimate.

I found this disappointing because it skips the hardest part. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing.

The context helps. Without it I would have assumed the opposite. I noticed the same thing in Jakarta. Glad you shared the messy version too.
