Explain Like I'm Five · by Faisal Al Saud · 2026-09-26

Why does explainers feel easy for everyone except me without overthinking it?

This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. learning got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam.

I know this is a tiny sample size, but after 7 attempts the pattern is pretty clear. When I keep the setup simple, I actually follow through.

Yes, but I would approach it in a small, testable way rather than trying to solve everything at once. The trap is trying to optimize before you have feedback.

- Start small and make the next step obvious.
- Keep notes so you can compare what worked.
- Ask someone with recent experience, not just strong opinions.

Source: mostly hard-won experience and comparing notes with people who stuck with it.

I had the same reaction to start.

My practical advice is to make the next step tiny enough that you can do it today. Momentum usually answers half the question. I would test it for 9 days before deciding.

I would ask what outcome you want in two weeks, not in some ideal future. That makes the choice much clearer. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

@nicolasrides I think both things can be true.

My version of this was messier, but the conclusion was similar.
