What is worth spending money on for research without overthinking it?

I know this is a tiny sample size, but after 8 attempts the pattern is pretty clear. When I keep the setup simple, I actually follow through.

I tried this in Cape Town with a friend and we both noticed the same thing: the social part mattered more than the perfect plan.

I would ask what outcome you want in two weeks, not in some ideal future. That makes the choice much clearer. I keep a note about physics for exactly this reason.

A useful way to think about it is mechanism first: what changes, what stays constant, and what evidence would distinguish the two. Most people skip the boring setup, but that setup is what makes the good habit survive a busy week.

- Start small and make the next step obvious.
- Keep notes so you can compare what worked.
- Ask someone with recent experience, not just strong opinions.

Source: mostly hard-won experience and comparing notes with people who stuck with it.

My practical advice is to make the next step tiny enough that you can do it today. Momentum usually answers half the question. It sounds small, but the first draft matters.
