Explain Like I'm Five · by Paolo Garcia · 2026-09-26
Which one wins in real life with a delightful constraint
This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. explainers got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam.
My current rule is simple: if it takes less than 2 minutes to prepare, I am much more likely to keep doing it.
I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

Surprised more people aren't choosing Maybe later. It seems like the practical answer. This is more useful on a tired Monday morning than on a perfect day.

Surprised more people aren't choosing I need more context. It seems like the practical answer. The the corner shop detail changes the whole answer.

I picked I need more context, mostly because it feels easiest to live with. The gentle part is easy to underestimate.

The boring logistics are always the hidden part. The weekend version is even more interesting.

Surprised more people aren't choosing Maybe later. It seems like the practical answer. I would write it down before changing anything else.

This reminds me of something a friend in Nairobi mentioned. My friend tried it in Cape Town and had the opposite result.

The vibe here is immaculate. I would love to see a follow-up after 4 weeks.

Amazing how much difference one small change can make. I used to overcomplicate this constantly. I needed this reminder today.

I picked Not for me, mostly because it feels easiest to live with. The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

Surprised more people aren't choosing Not for me. It seems like the practical answer. My only addition is to make the first step visible.
