Coffee · by Angel Reyes · 2026-09-27

My 7-month experiment with cafes without making it complicated

The detail that surprised me was how much my desk changed the outcome. Same plan, different setting, completely different energy.

I tried this in Warsaw with a friend and we both noticed the same thing: the social part mattered more than the perfect plan.

This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. beans got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam.

I like the idea, but the setup probably matters a lot. I keep a note about espresso for exactly this reason.

This comment has main-character footnote energy.

Noted, and thank you.

Angel Reyes · 12 likes

That is a much better way to say it.

Kind of wild how often probably is the whole issue.

Angel Reyes · 14 likes

My wallet felt that.

Mara Fischer · 2 likes

This is the gentle version of my rant.

Angel Reyes · 5 likes

Adding this to my notes.

Amina Okafor · 5 likes

This is the kind of disagreement I like.

Nusrat Akter · 2 likes

Could be regional too.

Hamza Malik · 48 likes

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. I would test it for 7 days before deciding.

Ananya Rao · 47 likes

This is useful for some cases, but terrible advice if the stakes are high. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability. Texture is doing a lot of work here.

Now I want a spreadsheet.

Midnight Lantern · 4 likes

Respectfully, I see it the other way.

Anna Gruber · 38 likes

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen.

Maya Williams · 35 likes

I needed the reminder to start smaller.

Camille Dubois · 37 likes

You explained the tradeoff really clearly. This is more useful on a tired Monday morning than on a perfect day.

Daniela Torres · 26 likes

I appreciate the honest middle stage, not just the polished ending.

Brave Baker · 9 likes

That is the part people skip.

Urban Noodle · 24 likes

I love this. It feels practical without pretending life is neat. The Cape Town example makes it feel concrete.

Emir Kaya · 24 likes

I am cheering for this update.

Martina Fernández · 23 likes

I appreciate the honest middle stage, not just the polished ending. The gentle part is easy to underestimate.

Priya Nair · 12 likes

Jack Taylor · 5 likes

@urban_sparrow44 I needed the reminder to start smaller.

Laura Gómez · 22 likes

This feels a little overrated to me, even if the intention is good. The quiet constraint is probably the real story.

Tola Ibrahim · 4 likes

That is a much better way to say it.

Grace Parker · 1 likes

I would pin this if I could.

Chloe Davis · 20 likes

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. This is more useful on a tired rainy evening than on a perfect day.

Valeria Flores · 18 likes

This has cozy competence written all over it. I am curious whether beans still feels good next month.

Martina Fernández · 17 likes

My version of this was messier, but the conclusion was similar. This pairs weirdly well with shakshuka.

Aisha Rahman · 16 likes

Excellent timing; I was just thinking about experiment. That is where the boring checklist helps.

Huy Le · 16 likes

The boring logistics are always the hidden part. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.

Imogen Clarke · 16 likes

I had a similar experience, but my problem was consistency rather than motivation. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.

Sleepy Fern · 2 likes

That made the concept click.

Lucas Dubois · 15 likes

The context helps. Without it I would have assumed the opposite. I would write it down before changing anything else. A squeeze of lemon would probably wake it up.

Brave Baker · 15 likes

That would annoy me more than it helped.

Ananya Rao · 13 likes

Amazing how much difference one small change can make. I would test it for 3 days before deciding.

Jisoo Park · 2 likes

I had the same reaction to small.

Brave Baker · 13 likes

I get the appeal, though I would be careful calling it the best option. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me. This is the kind of thing that tastes better the next day.

Gentle Otter · 12 likes

That is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error. This is the kind of thing that tastes better the next day.

Rachel Tan · 11 likes

I do not have a strong take, but the complicated detail is useful. I am curious whether beans still feels good next month.

Really good advice, and it feels doable. That is where the boring checklist helps.

Theo Bennett · 11 likes

Totally agree, especially for beginners.

I am mostly here for the follow-up. This is more useful on a tired commute than on a perfect day.

Bianca Santos · 7 likes

This. Exactly this.

Finn Brown · 8 likes

The cafes angle is what sold me. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me.

Angel Reyes · 8 likes

That last line is excellent. I used to overcomplicate this constantly.

Laura Gómez · 8 likes

Honestly, great taste. The rainy evening version is even more interesting.

Jasmine Cruz · 8 likes

I am saving this for the next time I overthink without. A little friction removed goes a long way.

Benjamín Rojas · 8 likes

I like the idea, but the setup probably matters a lot. The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

Lina Al Harbi · 7 likes

I like the idea, but the setup probably matters a lot. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

Angel Reyes · 4 likes

I am stealing that phrase.

Elsa Andersson · 5 likes

Agree completely. The simple version is underrated. I used to overcomplicate this constantly. Texture is doing a lot of work here.

Isha Menon · 33 likes

Appreciate the nuance.

I think both things can be true.

Adding this to my notes.

Angel Reyes · 25 likes

Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot.

Angel Reyes · 6 likes

I think both things can be true.

Ethan Brooks · 5 likes

Exactly; the hidden cost is energy.

This is the kind of disagreement I like.

Thanks for making it less intimidating.

Omar Hassan · 5 likes

Helpful correction.

Short answer: yes. Long answer: also yes.

Marco Conti · 9 likes

Anecdote beats theory here.

Camille Dubois · 2 likes

Totally agree, especially for beginners.

Angel Reyes · 1 likes

That is fair, but I still worry about maintenance.

Gentle Mango · 5 likes

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.

Jan Nowak · 5 likes

This made me smile more than expected. A little friction removed goes a long way.

Maya Williams · 5 likes

This depends heavily on budget, time and personality. The quiet Sunday version is even more interesting.

Noé Petit · 5 likes

Big fan of this approach. A little friction removed goes a long way.

Sleepy Panda · 4 likes

Jonas Schneider · 4 likes

Helpful and not preachy, which is rare. This pairs weirdly well with ramen.

Tola Ibrahim · 3 likes

I agree with the goal and disagree with the method. A little friction removed goes a long way.

Cedar Runner · 3 likes

The context helps. Without it I would have assumed the opposite. I would love to see a follow-up after 8 weeks.

Pixel Noodle · 3 likes

Interesting. I would like to see how it changes after 2 months. My friend tried it in Buenos Aires and had the opposite result.

Khalid Al Zahrani · 2 likes

There is a hidden assumption here that not everyone shares.

Tomás Gómez · 2 likes

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. A little friction removed goes a long way.

Jan Nowak · 2 likes

Fair point, but I had the opposite experience. The low-effort version is probably the keeper. I would absolutely hover near the kitchen for this.

[deleted] · 2 likes

The without angle is what sold me. The Seoul example makes it feel concrete.

Daniela Torres · 2 likes

Glad you shared it; small wins count. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing.

Jisoo Park · 2 likes

I wonder how much of this depends on timing. For me it came down to the first draft.

Aoi Ito · 1 likes

I like the idea, but the setup probably matters a lot. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

My first thought was cost, then time, then whether I would remember to do it. The social part surprised me too.
