Open Source · by Kabir Khan · 2026-09-28

I finally understand why Open Source people care about maintainers on a budget

My current rule is simple: if it takes less than 9 minutes to prepare, I am much more likely to keep doing it.

A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat

I tried this in Madrid with a friend and we both noticed the same thing: the social part mattered more than the perfect plan.

I do not have a strong take, but the finally detail is useful. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.

Really good advice, and it feels doable. I would test it for 9 days before deciding.

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me. The boring solution is probably the reliable one here.

I am saving this for the next time I overthink care. The 4-minute rule is underrated. A small test case would make this easier to trust.

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. That is where the boring checklist helps.

My wallet felt that.

That is a much better way to say it.

Can you expand on that a bit?

That made the concept click.

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. My friend tried it in Melbourne and had the opposite result.
