Web Dev · by Jasmine Cruz · 2026-09-30

I tried doing css the boring way and it worked on a budget

A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat

Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make Web Dev feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.

Would love to hear how other people handle this. I am especially curious about the version that works on a tired weekday, not just on an ideal Sunday.

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the tiny repair for a while.

The kindness in this post is lovely. The 5-minute rule is underrated.

@brave_coder44 I am curious what changed your mind.

Anecdote beats theory here.

Thanks for making it less intimidating.

I would push back gently on the doing part. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing.

That is a good question for people with more experience than me. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me.

Wonderful detail. It makes the whole thing feel real. I noticed the same thing in Toronto.

I do not have a strong take, but the boring detail is useful. I would write it down before changing anything else.

I would pin this if I could.

That sounds great until you add children/pets/deadlines.

@ar_lantern Same here. It took me too long to learn.

I disagree a bit. doing matters, but the bigger issue is usually expectations. The awkward constraint is probably the real story.

Beautifully concise.

I appreciate the honest middle stage, not just the polished ending. The winter version is even more interesting.

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. I would write it down before changing anything else.
