Today I Learned · by Ananya Rao · 2026-10-01

A gentle rant about culture and expectations without making it complicated

I know this is a tiny sample size, but after 10 attempts the pattern is pretty clear. When I keep the setup simple, I actually follow through.

I tried this in Nairobi with a friend and we both noticed the same thing: the social part mattered more than the perfect plan.

I tried this in Toronto with a friend and we both noticed the same thing: the social part mattered more than the perfect plan.

I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

Glad you shared it; small wins count. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me.

I am saving this for the next time I overthink expectations. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability. Small progress still counts.

This sounds sensible, though I would need to test it myself. This is more useful on a tired quiet Sunday than on a perfect day.

Totally agree, especially for beginners.

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. I learned that one the expensive way.

The vibe here is immaculate. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

Amazing how much difference one small change can make. The Monday morning version is even more interesting.

What happened after the first week? I am curious whether culture stayed easy.

Noah Johansson · 21 likes

Could be regional too.

That is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it. The 9-minute rule is underrated. People underestimate how much sleep changes the answer.

Great point, especially the part about culture.

Honestly, great taste. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near the library. Small progress still counts.

I do not have a strong take, but the making detail is useful.
