Today I Learned · by Quiet Atlas · 2026-10-02

Voyager Golden Record is a deeper rabbit hole than I expected after 40 tries

en.wikipedia.org

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the setup for a while.

I started this because my commute felt a little stuck, and history seemed like a manageable place to experiment. The funny part is that the smallest change was the one I kept.

A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat

Did anyone else read this and immediately make a tiny checklist? I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.

This made me smile more than expected.

There is probably a middle ground here.

Love the tiny experiment energy. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

Now I want a spreadsheet.

I needed the reminder to start smaller.

There is a hidden assumption here that not everyone shares. I would test it for 10 days before deciding.

Adding this to my notes.

The context helps. Without it I would have assumed the opposite.

There is a hidden assumption here that not everyone shares. The 3-minute rule is underrated.

Agree completely. The simple version is underrated. This is more useful on a tired winter than on a perfect day.
