Basketball · by Iryna Melnyk · 2026-10-02

I tried doing pickup the boring way and it worked after a tiny failure

Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make Basketball feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.

> Tiny progress is still progress.

That line sounds cheesy, but it got me through the part where training stopped feeling new.

I know this is a tiny sample size, but after 6 attempts the pattern is pretty clear. When I keep the setup simple, I actually follow through.

Did anyone else read this and immediately make a tiny checklist? This is where I would ask one more question before choosing.

My first thought was cost, then time, then whether I would remember to do it. The commute version is even more interesting. Tactics are half the fun when nobody is shouting.

Helpful and not preachy, which is rare. The 8-minute rule is underrated.

I had the same reaction to helpful.

There is a hidden assumption here that not everyone shares. The São Paulo example makes it feel concrete.

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. The 10-minute rule is underrated.

Amazing how much difference one small change can make.

Wonderful detail. It makes the whole thing feel real. It sounds small, but the tiny repair matters. That route sounds like type-two fun.

I like this more than the top-level advice.

Yep, the boring details matter.

My version of this was messier, but the conclusion was similar. It sounds small, but the tiny repair matters.

I do not have a strong take, but the failure detail is useful. The low-effort version is probably the keeper. Consistency beats intensity here.

I am stealing that phrase.

I am mostly here for the follow-up. I would test it for 4 days before deciding.

Amazing how much difference one small change can make. The Istanbul example makes it feel concrete. The best gear is the one that gets used.

That is the part people skip.

I think both things can be true.

That sounds great until you add children/pets/deadlines.

I found this disappointing because it skips the hardest part. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing.

Anecdote beats theory here.

My wallet felt that.

I laughed, but you are not wrong.

This is genuinely helpful, thanks for writing it out. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.

My version of this was messier, but the conclusion was similar. For me it came down to the playlist.

That is fair, but I still worry about maintenance.

I wonder how much of this depends on timing. The Mexico City example makes it feel concrete.

The kindness in this post is lovely. I used to overcomplicate this constantly.

You explained the tradeoff really clearly. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.

I get the appeal, though I would be careful calling it the best option.
