Language Learning · by Achieng Njeri · 2026-10-03

What is a realistic first 3-week plan for speaking with limited time?

Would love to hear how other people handle this. I am especially curious about the version that works on a tired weekday, not just on an ideal Sunday.

Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make Language Learning feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.

The kindness in this post is lovely.

Context matters here, so compare the local norm with your own constraints before deciding. You will learn more from a simple version repeated three times than from a perfect plan you never start.

- Do ten minutes daily instead of one giant weekend session.
- Save phrases you actually want to say.
- Speak badly on purpose; fluency needs reps.

Source: mostly hard-won experience and comparing notes with people who stuck with it.

Learn a few local phrases and one apology phrase. People are usually generous when they see you trying. The social part surprised me too.

That is a much better way to say it.

For travel days, leave one flexible block. The best thing on a trip is often the thing you did not schedule. The 9-minute rule is underrated.

Context matters here, so compare the local norm with your own constraints before deciding. If two options look equal, choose the one that is easier to reverse.

That should give you a solid first pass.

Good clarification — I read it differently at first.

This is the gentle version of my rant.

I am stealing that phrase.

Check the neighborhood at the time of day you will actually use it. A place can feel totally different at 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. A little friction removed goes a long way.
