The practical joy of doing the practice run badly at first for absolute beginners

A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat

This is probly obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. shoes got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam.

> Tiny progress is still progress.

That line sounds cheesy, but it got me through the part where marathon stopped feeling new

There is a hidden assumption here that not everyone shares. The Kuala Lumpur example makes it feel concrete

Excellent timing; I was just thinking about badly. The the train station detail changes the whole answer. Small progress still counts

that is fair, but I still worry about maintenance

Thanks that actually helped

I am curious what changed your mind

Exactly; the hidden cost is energy

Appreciate the nuance

Honestly, great taste. I noticed the same thing in Cape Town

Sofía Hernández · 13 likes

fair point, but I had the opposite experience. That is the kind of detail beginners miss. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages

Curious Rider · 12 likes

Great point, especially the part about beginners. My friend tried it in Seoul and had the opposite result

The vibe here is immaculate. My only addition is to make the first step visible. The follow-through matters more than the perfect plan

Kabir Khan · 10 likes

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me

yep, the boring details matter

This is adorable and oddly motivating

I love this. It feels practical without pretending life is neat. I used to overcomplicate this constantly

This is the gentle version of my rant

Love the tiny experiment energy. The 5-minute rule is underrated. Small progress still counts

I love this. It feels practical without pretending life is neat. I am curious whether shoes still feels good next month

I am skeptical. The idea sounds good, but teh maintenance cost is real. That is teh kind of detail beginners miss

Mariam Al Mansoori · 4 likes

The best answer in the thread, honestly

Tanvir Rahman · 3 likes

That is a good boundary

Cozy Sparrow · 6 likes

That would annoy me more then it helped. This is more useful on a tired weekend than on a perfect day

Noah Miller · 5 likes

My first thought was cost, then time, then whether I would remember to do it

Ethan Brooks · 1 likes

Kind of wild how often whether is the whole issue

Iryna Melnyk · 5 likes

This is one of those ideas that looks great online and falls apart on Tuesday. I would test it for 8 days before deciding

Gentle Noodle · 5 likes

This feels a little overrated to me, even if the intention is good. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error

Maya Williams · 5 likes

anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. The 10-minute rule is underrated

Camille Dubois · 4 likes

Great point, especially the part about badly

Isha Menon · 7 likes

I think both things can be true

Avery Johnson · 5 likes

That is a much better way to say it

Aarav Sharma · 6 likes

Can you expand on that a bit?

Mango Coder · 3 likes

adding this to my notes

anecdote beats theory here

I wish more posts had this much context. A little friction removed goes a long way. People underestimate how much sleep changes the answer

Bilal Raza · 4 likes

Helpful and not preachy, wich is rare. That is where the boring checklist helps

João Pereira · 4 likes

Glad you shared it; small wins count. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing

Imogen Clarke · 3 likes

I wish more posts had this much context. I noticed the same thing in Lagos

Ethan Brooks · 2 likes

I am saving this for the next time I overthink doing. The useful part is easy to underestimate

I wish more posts had this much context. I would write it down before changing anything else

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near a tiny balcony

Luca Bianchi · 1 likes

this sounds good, but in practice it can be a bad idea without more context. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me. Small progress still counts

Mango Coder · 9 likes

That sounds great until you add children/pets/deadlines

Cedar Mango · 0 likes

That is a much better way to say it

The best answer in the thread, honestly

Isha Menon · 2 likes

I like this more then the top-level advice

Piotr Zieliński · 1 likes

That is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it. The winter version is even more interesting

Kabir Khan · 6 likes

Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot

Salma Idrissi · 1 likes

I appreciate teh honest middle stage, not just teh polished ending. I used to overcomplicate this constantly

Rapid Marauder · 1 likes

I found this disappointing because it skips the hardest part. My only addition is to make the first step visible

Nour Ali · 1 likes

I love this. It feels practical without pretending life is neat. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near a coworking table

Lucas Dubois · 1 likes

Really good advice, and it feels doable. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me. People underestimate how much sleep changes the answer

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near the library

Mango Coder · 0 likes

@chinedu-55 I would pin this if I could

Liam Eriksson · 1 likes

The practical angle is what sold me. The social part surprised me too

Curious Marauder · 1 likes

The kindness in this post is lovely. The weekend version is even more interesting

Tomás Gómez · 1 likes

There is probably a middle ground here. The awkward part is easy to underestimate

Paolo Garcia · 0 likes

The conclusion is too broad but the example is interesting. It sounds small, but the conversation matters. Glad you shared the messy version too

Good reminder that boring can be good. I would write it down before changing anything else
