Today I Learned · by Beatriz Sousa · 2026-10-05

A beginner mistake I am weirdly glad I made for absolute beginners

I started this because my winter felt a little stuck, and history seemed like a manageable place to experiment. The funny part is that the smallest change was the one I kept.

Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make Today I Learned feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.

This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. history got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam.

I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

Honestly, great taste. The beautiful part is easy to underestimate.

Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot.

@mangoRunner31 I was going to disagree, but your second sentence got me.

Beautifully concise.

This reminds me of something a friend in Dublin mentioned. I would love to see a follow-up after 5 weeks.

I am mostly here for the follow-up. The winter version is even more interesting. Glad you shared the messy version too.

Really good advice, and it feels doable. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near a tiny balcony.

This depends heavily on budget, time and personality. For me it came down to the playlist.

This is genuinely helpful, thanks for writing it out. The beautiful part is easy to underestimate. I needed this reminder today.

Exactly; the hidden cost is energy.

Good clarification — I read it differently at first.
