Explain Like I'm Five · by Zeynep Demir · 2026-10-05

Settle a friendly Explain Like I'm Five debate after 39 tries

A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat

My current rule is simple: if it takes less than 10 minutes to prepare, I am much more likely to keep doing it.

I know this is a tiny sample size, but after 7 attempts the pattern is pretty clear. When I keep the setup simple, I actually follow through.

I picked I need more context, mostly because it feels easiest to live with. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

Surprised more people aren't choosing I need more context. It seems like the practical answer. I learned that one the expensive way.

Surprised more people aren't choosing Only with help. It seems like the practical answer. My friend tried it in São Paulo and had the opposite result.

That last line is excellent. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

I had a similar experience, but my problem was consistency rather than motivation. I keep a note about simple for exactly this reason.

I picked Not for me, mostly because it feels easiest to live with. It sounds small, but the conversation matters.

I was going to disagree, but your second sentence got me.

What happened after the first week? I am curious whether five stayed easy. That is where the boring checklist helps.

There is probably a middle ground here. The delightful constraint is probably the real story. The follow-through matters more than the perfect plan.

Fair point, but I had the opposite experience. This pairs weirdly well with falafel. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages.

Haruto Sato · 3 likes

This is the kind of disagreement I like.
