Explain Like I'm Five · by Sara Ahmed · 2026-10-06
Notes from a very normal quiet Sunday with Explain Like I'm Five with an ambitious constraint
Would love to hear how other people handle this. I am especially curious about the version that works on a tired weekday, not just on an ideal Sunday.
I know this is a tiny sample size, but after 5 attempts the pattern is pretty clear. When I keep the setup simple, I actually follow through.

There is probably a middle ground here. The first week version is even more interesting.

@midnight_martina This is the gentle version of my rant.

Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot.

Agree completely. The simple version is underrated. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

@midnight_ngozi I had the same reaction to step.

You explained the tradeoff really clearly. The beautiful part is easy to underestimate.

This is useful for some cases, but terrible advice if the stakes are high. My only addition is to make the first step visible. Glad you shared the messy version too.

I love this. It feels practical without pretending life is neat. I noticed the same thing in Dublin.

What would you change if you started over? I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.

Big fan of this approach. The social part surprised me too.

This is genuinely helpful, thanks for writing it out. The the train station detail changes the whole answer. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages.

Great point, especially the part about normal. I am curious whether simple still feels good next month.
