What I wish I knew before trying people

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the prototype for a while.

I am mostly here for the follow-up. I used to overcomplicate this constantly. The follow-through matters more than the perfect plan.

Maya Putri · 13 likes

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing.

That is a good boundary.

Anecdote beats theory here.

Rafael Almeida · 1 likes

Yep, the boring details matter.

Noé Petit · 0 likes

Thanks, that actually helped.

Great point, especially the part about wish. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near a coworking table.

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. My friend tried it in São Paulo and had the opposite result.

Urban Otter · 13 likes

Fair point, but I had the opposite experience. For me it came down to the route.

Ngozi Bello · 13 likes

Can you share what you tried before this? The practical part is easy to underestimate.

I like the idea, but the setup probably matters a lot. That is where the boring checklist helps.

This reminds me of something a friend in Dublin mentioned. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

This feels like advice from a patient friend. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

That is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it. I would love to see a follow-up after 10 weeks.

Jan Nowak · 6 likes

@paolo-93 That sounds great until you add children/pets/deadlines.

Sofía Hernández · 5 likes

This is genuinely helpful, thanks for writing it out. I would love to see a follow-up after 4 weeks.

This made me smile more than expected. It sounds small, but the recipe matters. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages.

Wonderful detail. It makes the whole thing feel real. The winter version is even more interesting. Small progress still counts.

Fair point, but I had the opposite experience.

Noé Petit · 3 likes

@dev_lina0 Noted, and thank you.

I was going to disagree, but your second sentence got me.

Lucas Dubois · 0 likes

Beautifully concise.

Oliver Smith · 3 likes

The best answer in the thread, honestly.

Yui Tanaka · 2 likes

I think both things can be true.

Aarav Sharma · 0 likes

Totally agree, especially for beginners.

Oliver Smith · 6 likes

I am curious what changed your mind.

Hugo Sánchez · 2 likes

That is fair, but I still worry about maintenance.

Tola Ibrahim · 1 likes

That is the part people skip.

Pixel Fern · 1 likes

I was going to disagree, but your second sentence got me.

Tola Ibrahim · 2 likes

Kind of wild how often fair is the whole issue.

Tomás Gómez · 37 likes

That is fair, but I still worry about maintenance.

The Tuesday test is undefeated.

Liam Naidoo · 2 likes

Glad you shared it; small wins count. This pairs weirdly well with mango sticky rice.

Tiny Runner · 2 likes

I would push back gently on the wish part. I would test it for 3 days before deciding.

Lucas Silva · 1 likes

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

Valeria López · 0 likes

The Tuesday test is undefeated.

Mehdi Benali · 1 likes

There is a hidden assumption here that not everyone shares. This pairs weirdly well with mango sticky rice.

Hamza Malik · 1 likes

This made me smile more than expected. I keep a note about questions for exactly this reason.

Theo Bennett · 1 likes

This depends heavily on budget, time and personality. I learned that one the expensive way.

Nour Ali · 1 likes

Helpful and not preachy, which is rare. I would write it down before changing anything else.

Sleepy Marauder · 1 likes

Do you think this would work in a smaller place than Cape Town? It sounds small, but the prototype matters.

Emma Tremblay · 1 likes

Big fan of this approach. I would love to see a follow-up after 3 weeks. I needed this reminder today.

This reminds me of something a friend in Istanbul mentioned. The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

@pixel_runner Helpful correction.
