Explain Like I'm Five · by Salma Idrissi · 2026-10-07

The small learning habit that changed my late summer before coffee

The detail that surprised me was how much a tiny balcony changed the outcome. Same plan, different setting, completely different energy.

A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat

This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. questions got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam.

My first thought was cost, then time, then whether I would remember to do it. I would write it down before changing anything else.

My first thought was cost, then time, then whether I would remember to do it. Glad you shared the messy version too.

Really good advice, and it feels doable.

I am mostly here for the follow-up. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near a family dinner.

Exactly; the hidden cost is energy.

Love the tiny experiment energy. I learned that one the expensive way.

I am cheering for this update. The cozy part is easy to underestimate. Small progress still counts.

This sounds sensible, though I would need to test it myself. The the train station detail changes the whole answer.

@br_lantern50 Respectfully, I see it the other way.

Excellent timing; I was just thinking about learning. I would love to see a follow-up after 5 weeks. I needed this reminder today.

Now I want a spreadsheet.

Thanks for making it less intimidating.

I think both things can be true.

@laurarides I am curious what changed your mind.

I agree with the goal and disagree with the method. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.

I am skeptical. The idea sounds good, but the maintenance cost is real. I noticed the same thing in Dublin. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages.
