The thing nobody told me about classics for absolute beginners

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the playlist for a while.

> Tiny progress is still progress.

That line sounds cheesy, but it got me through the part where classics stopped feeling new.

I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

My current rule is simple: if it takes less than 4 minutes to prepare, I am much more likely to keep doing it.

My first thought was cost, then time, then whether I would remember to do it. I used to overcomplicate this constantly.

That made the concept click.

You just saved me a bad purchase.

Wonderful detail. It makes the whole thing feel real.

Beautifully concise.

Amazing how much difference one small change can make. I would test it for 5 days before deciding.

Big fan of this approach. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

Not wrong, but I think this underestimates how different people's constraints are. I keep a note about classics for exactly this reason.

Totally agree, especially for beginners.

The vibe here is immaculate. I keep a note about evs for exactly this reason.

This. Exactly this.

Ethan Brooks · 5 likes

That is the part people skip.

I was going to disagree, but your second sentence got me.

This is the gentle version of my rant.

Wonderful detail. It makes the whole thing feel real. Tactics are half the fun when nobody is shouting.

Thanks, that actually helped.

I would love a follow-up example.

Respectfully, I see it the other way.

The vibe here is immaculate. I am curious whether maintenance still feels good next month.

This sounds sensible, though I would need to test it myself. I keep a note about classics for exactly this reason.

The kindness in this post is lovely. The gentle constraint is probably the real story. Recovery is training too.

Jan Nowak · 2 likes

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. That is the kind of detail beginners miss.

Antonia Silva · 6 likes

I needed the reminder to start smaller.

Ethan Brooks · 4 likes

@midnight_jan That is fair, but I still worry about maintenance.

Beatriz Sousa · 2 likes

That is a much better way to say it.

My wallet felt that.

I am stealing that phrase.

I am skeptical. The idea sounds good, but the maintenance cost is real. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

My version of this was messier, but the conclusion was similar. That is where the boring checklist helps.

Amazing how much difference one small change can make. The 5-minute rule is underrated.

I am stealing that phrase.

The best answer in the thread, honestly.

The Tuesday test is undefeated.

Could be regional too.

I am saving this for the next time I overthink classics. The Manila example makes it feel concrete.

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. For me it came down to the routine.
