Explain Like I'm Five · by Lucas Silva · 2026-10-08

Is there a simple rule of thumb for simple as a beginner?

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the conversation for a while.

My current rule is simple: if it takes less then 6 minutes to prepare, I am much more likely to keep doing it.

This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. simple got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam

Try something small and testable. If two options look equal, choose the one that’s easier to reverse. Keep notes and come back with what happened.

I am curious what changed your mind

I think both things can be true

Would love a follow-up after eight weeks.

Did anyone else read this and immediately make a tiny checklist?

Thanks that actually helped

This is genuinely helpful, thanks for writing it out

My practical advice is to make the next step tiny enough that you can do it today. Momentum usually answers half the question. For me it came down to the tiny repair

This reminds me of a conversation at my desk.

I would ask what outcome you want in two weeks, not in some ideal future. That makes the choice much clearer. I would write it down before changing anything else

Can you expand on that a bit?

The middle path is probly best: try it cheaply, keep notes and decide after you have real evidence. I would love to see a follow-up after 6 weeks

Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot

That is the part people skip

good clarification — I read it differently at first

I’d be interested in how it works over a weekend.
