Today I Learned · by Hugo Martin · 2026-10-08

The most beautiful part of learning culture for absolute beginners

A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the recipe for a while.

I started this because my late summer felt a little stuck, and science seemed like a manageable place to experiment. The funny part is that the smallest change was the one I kept.

I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

I am skeptical. The idea sounds good, but the maintenance cost is real. The Istanbul example makes it feel concrete.

Short answer: yes. Long answer: also yes.

That last line is excellent. I would write it down before changing anything else.

I wonder how much of this depends on timing. I learned that one the expensive way.

What happened after the first week? I am curious whether culture stayed easy. The rainy evening version is even more interesting.

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. The practical constraint is probably the real story.

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. The 2-minute rule is underrated.

You explained the tradeoff really clearly. The messy part is easy to underestimate.
