I tried doing gear the boring way and it worked
I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.
My current rule is simple: if it takes less than 3 minutes to prepare, I am much more likely to keep doing it.

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the first draft for a while.

Fair point, but I had the opposite experience. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing.

Excellent timing; I was just thinking about gear. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.

Glad you shared it; small wins count. The Dublin example makes it feel concrete. A squeeze of lemon would probably wake it up.

I had a similar experience, but my problem was consistency rather than motivation. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing.
