Explain Like I'm Five · by Valentina Ruiz · 2026-10-09
A tiny win from Dublin that made my week without making it complicated
I started this because my weekend felt a little stuck, and explainers seemed like a manageable place to experiment. The funny part is that the smallest change was the one I kept.
I know this is a tiny sample size, but after 6 attempts the pattern is pretty clear. When I keep the setup simple, I actually follow through.
My current rule is simple: if it takes less than 6 minutes to prepare, I am much more likely to keep doing it.
> Tiny progress is still progress.
That line sounds cheesy, but it got me through the part where explainers stopped feeling new.

I disagree a bit. without matters, but the bigger issue is usually expectations. A little friction removed goes a long way. The follow-through matters more than the perfect plan.

Amazing how much difference one small change can make. The Kuala Lumpur example makes it feel concrete.

That sounds great until you add children/pets/deadlines.

I had the same reaction to make.

Big fan of this approach. That is where the boring checklist helps.

The context helps. Without it I would have assumed the opposite. I am curious whether learning still feels good next month.

I am cheering for this update. I would write it down before changing anything else.

This is genuinely helpful, thanks for writing it out. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me.

This sounds sensible, though I would need to test it myself.

The kindness in this post is lovely. This pairs weirdly well with falafel.
