Explain Like I'm Five · by Sophie Gagnon · 2026-10-09

I changed one thing and suddenly simple made sense with a messy constraint

Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make Explain Like I'm Five feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.

This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. questions got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam.

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the first draft for a while.

That is a good question for people with more experience than me. The beautiful part is easy to underestimate.

There is a hidden assumption here that not everyone shares. I am curious whether explainers still feels good next month.

Anecdote beats theory here.

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. This pairs weirdly well with pierogi.

The best answer in the thread, honestly.

Interesting. I would like to see how it changes after 4 months. I learned that one the expensive way.

Big fan of this approach. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near the kitchen.
